Blue Plaque Unveiled for William Holland of Warwick
(10 Apr. 2024)

Trustee, Suzanne Phillips Galloway, attended the unveiling of a blue plaque for 19th century stained glass artist William Holland of Warwick.

Suzanne attended the unveiling of the plaque at 3 Priory Road, Warwick, on behalf of The Stained Glass Museum on Friday 5 April 2024.

Lynne Hampson, a local stained glass artist who instigated the plaque, and the Mayor of Warwick Oliver Jacques also attended the unveiling at the grade 2 listed building, ‘The Glassworks’, which was the base for William Holland’s glasswork business.
Suzanne said, “ The Stained Glass Museum was delighted to be involved with commemorating the work and life of a stained glass maker in Warwick of both local and national importance”.

Holland was a 19th century British maker of stained glass who founded his firm ‘Holland, William and Son, St John’s Warwick. Designers and Producers. Stained glass of the 12th century representing scriptural events’ and established his studio in the rear workshop.
He trained and worked alongside his sons and his nephew, Frank Holt. The business later became known as “Holland and Holt”.

Holland exhibited at The Great Exhibition of 1851 and he was one of 25 stained glass makers invited to exhibit. He was later known as Stained Glass Painter by appointment of Queen Victoria.

William commissioned the building of this residence and adjoining workshop on Priory Road in 1847, where he employed 26 men and boys, who produced some of the country’s finest stained glass and interior decorations, much of which can still be seen across the county today.

The workshop was in use until 1913, when the Warwickshire Yeomanry took over the site.
