ASCENSION

Brief description: Stained glass light of The Ascension. At the top of the light Jesus Christ is depicted, standing under an arch with his right arm raised. He is wearing a halo, a cream robe and red cloak. The background is of blue grisaille ground with stars. Below is a group of eight disciples in varied garments forming semi-circle with arms stretched upwards. Made by Michael and Arthur O'Connor.

Michael O'Connor, 1801-67, and his sons Arthur (1826-73) and William Henry had a successful stained glass firm in London. They were among the stained glass firms to exhibit at the Great Exhibition. This window was commissioned in memory of two local parishioners. In 'The Ascension', and its companion light 'The Resurrection', Christ is pictured in the upper panel. His feet overlap the border between panels, perhaps emphasising his transition from earth to heaven.
