RESURRECTION

Brief description: Stained glass light of the Resurrection. Christ, haloed, cream robe and red cloak, stands under arch with blue grisaille ground and stars, banner in hand. Made by Michael and Arthur O'Connor, 1854.

Three panel light of the Resurrection. Christ stands under arch with blue grisaille background and stars. Red and yellow halo, cream robe, red cloak, holding cross with banner in right hand which overlaps border. Lower panel has angel at the empty tomb. Michael O'Connor (1801-67) and his sons Arthur (1826-73) and William Henry had a successful stained glass firm in London. They were among the stained glass firms to exhibit at the Great Exhibition. This window was commissioned in memory of two local parishioners. The design for 'The Ascension' combines traditional iconographic form decorative pattern and gothic canopies with a more unusual treatment of perspective in the lower panel where the angel can be seen sitting by Christ's empty tomb. This makes allusion to Christ's prior Resurrection.
