DESIGN FOR 5TH BATTALION MEMORIAL WINDOW
Brief description: Coloured design by Leonard Walker for a window in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire.
3 light designs for a window occupying a prominent position above the main staircase in Stoke Town Hall, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, signed by the designer Leonard Walker. The centre light depicts an angel and the lights either side depict contemporary scenes (behind standards). The actual surface of the window is under 100sq feet although it took over 200 sq feet of glass in its construction. In many cases two and sometimes three thicknesses of glass are leaded together to get the effect. Leonard met and chatted to those linked to the batallion to ensure the context of the window. The left light gives a general idea of Stoke-On-Trent with the church, kilns, chimneys, barge (carrying in clay) and gasometer. The right window is typical Colliery district with pitheads, slag heas and buildings. The regimental colours are seen blowing in the breeze. As their positions would not allow the battles to be easily read these were placed on scrolls at the bottom of the windows. The centre window shows the figure of Triumph; having blown a trumpet she is receiving the dove of peace in her hand. In the foreground of the three windows are masses of flowers with red popies for remembrance. There are a few gleaming bayonets on a hedge on each side (left and right light) where the staffs of the flags rest and they direct the viewer to look at the central figure. Leonard put another feature into the window for children and adults to discover if they looked deeply enough.
