PHOTOGRAPH OF LEONARD WALKER
Brief description: Black and white photograph of Leonard Walker standing on a ladder beside the first installed window, of three, dedicated to Hendry Hodson at St. Ethelburga, Bishopsgate.
Black and white photograph c.1920-25 of L. Walker standing on a ladder beside the first of three windows (newly installed?) dedicated to Henry Hodson at St. Ethelburga, Bishopsgate. The first light shows Henry Hudson stood in front of the 17th century 80-ton 'Hopewell' ship. The three light window was dedicated to the adventures of Henry Hodson at St. Ethelburga, Bishopsgate (he and his crew took communion here in 1607 before they set out on their quest for the North-West passage). The window was destroyed by an IRA bomb in April 1993. The 1992 Baltic Exchange and 1994 Bishopsgate IRA bombs caused considerable damage in this area of London and affected the Leatherseller's Company building which also contained Leonard Walker's stained glass window showing King Henry VI conferring the Company's first charter in 1444. This window was made in 1937 and saved from destruction by being stored outside London during World War II. In 1992 the Leatherseller's window was badly damaged by the Baltic Exchange terrorist bomb but fortunately was able to be restored. Of minor interest, the truck containing the bomb was parked outside 99 Bishopsgate the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, founding member of the HSBC group. In 1930 Leonard Walker produced 12 panels one containing the Commerce panel in a a 17ft by 7ft light for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank in Singapore. Where the original Commerce window is now is unknown.
