DESIGN FOR THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF MUSIC WINDOW
Brief description: Coloured design by Leonard Walker inscribed The Royal Academy of Music (RAM)
Design for a crest/emblem themed window or possibly an upper light, signed Leonard Walker. The design shows a lyre enclosed by laurel leaves (intertwined with text), a Royal crown above and a cornucopia of other images. The emblem suggests the window may have been commissioned by Sir Stanley Marchant for The Royal Acadamy of Music. Leonard Walker designed and executed decorative windows for the Royal Academy of Music at the suggestion of the Principal Sir Stanley Marchant in 1944 which remain in situ. The central window shows a Figure of Victory arising with the morning sun of a new era. Having sounded a victorious note on her trumpet, she greets the Dove of Peace. Crowning the side windows are two damsels contributing their music to the chorus of thankfulness. The left side window show the Royal Arms whilst the right side window shows the crest of the Royal Academy of Music, with lyre. The use of the lyre enclosed with laurel leaves and an inscription for the Royal School of Church music may indicate that this design was a concept for part of the final window or else an additional window was constructed elsewhere for Sir Stanley Marchant.
