THE ANNUNCIATION TO THE VIRGIN
Brief description: A light depicting the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary. The base panel shows a cruciform floral design. The majority of the light is medieval although the base panel was heavily restored by John Hardman and Company in 1866.
Originally from St John the Baptist in the Worcestershire hamlet of Hadzor, this medieval window depicts the biblical story of the Annunciation to the Virgin, when the Angel Gabriel told the Virgin Mary she was going to give birth to the Christ child. Devotion to the Virgin Mary was widespread across Europe in the Middle Ages and particularly in England. This window, one of the finest examples of English 14th-century glass-painting, illustrates the elegance and sophistication of the 'Decorated' style. Designed by an English Artist from the West Midlands in c.1340, the glass was heavily restored by John Hardman and Company in 1866. The glass was removed from the church when the building was deconsecrated in the 1970s.
