THE ANNUNCIATION
Brief description: Design for a stained glass window of five lights with tracery depicting the annunciation to the shepherds, when the angels anounced the birth of Jesus. to the shepherds. The tracery lights include a rose and a tracery. Designed by Heaton, Butler and Bayne.
The starting point for making any stained glass window is a sketch design. In the 19th and 20th centuries these were often produced to scale in watercolour and pen and used to show the client and secure the commission. This sketch is a design for a five-light stained glass window depicting the Annunciation to the Shepherds. It was produced by the Victorian firm of Heaton, Butler and Bayne for a church in Sevenoaks, Kent. A host of angels can be seen descending from the heavens in a large ball of clouds, while the shepherds look up with amazement. The heavenly clouds emphasise the circular forms found in the tracery rose at the top of the window. Beneath the shepherds are the symbols of the four evangelists, Matthew (a man or angel), Mark (Lion), Luke (Ox), and John (Eagle) with the agnus dei (Lamb of God) in the centre.
