When are you open?
The Stained Glass Museum is closed until further notice due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Please check our website and social media for updates.
Do I need to pre-book / buy tickets in advance?
If you are visiting The Stained Glass Museum only, tickets can be purchased in advance online from Art Tickets.
If you are visiting both Ely Cathedral and The Stained Glass Museum, you must buy a joint ticket in advance from Ely Cathedral.
Visitors are encouraged to follow a designated route around Ely Cathedral, entering through the West Door and exiting through the South Door. As The Stained Glass Museum is located before this visitor route begins, we encourage you to visit the museum before you begin your visit of the Cathedral.
Do I need to wear a face mask or face covering?
It is a legal requirement for visitors to wear a face covering throughout the museum. Those exempt from wearing a face covering, for age, health or disability reasons, in line with NHS guidelines, are still welcome.
Will you refuse entry to those who do not wear a face covering?
We will not refuse entry if you are exempt from wearing a face covering for age, health or disability reasons.
Will I need to leave details for NHS Test and Trace?
It is mandatory for visitors and customers to provide your details to assist the NHS Test and Trace programme, which allows the NHS to rapidly detect people who have recently come into contact with a new Covid-19 case. We will ask all customers and visitors who do not already have joint tickets purchased from Ely Cathedral* to scan a QR code to check-in using the NHS COVID-19 App, or to provide us with:
● the name of the customer or visitor;
● a contact phone number;
● date of visit, arrival time and, where possible, departure time
As per our data protection policy, we will hold the records for 21 days, before deleting or disposing of them securely. As per the museum’s Data Management Policy, all collected data will comply with GDPR and should not be kept for longer than necessary.
*This includes visitors and customers only visiting the museum or its shop. Visitors with joint tickets will have been asked for NHS Test and Trace details at Ely Cathedral admission desks.
Do I have to give my details?
Providing your details for NHS Test and Trace is mandatory from 14 September 2020.
Are you restricting visitor numbers to the museum?
We may restrict the number of visitors entering the museum at one time to ensure adherence to social distancing.
As a rule of thumb we will not host more than 25 visitors in the museum at one time, and may need to control the flow of visitors through the museum entrance/shop area.
We will limit entry to the museum, and adopt a one in, one out policy in certain areas of the museum, whilst avoiding the creation of additional bottlenecks and queuing.
What should I expect from my visit? What has changed?
On arrival (before ascending the stairs) visitors will see signage instructing:
● Visitors to wear a face covering in the museum;
● To use the hand sanitiser station before going up the stairs;
● How to use the traffic-light controlled entrance and exit up and down the stairs.
On arrival in the museum shop, they will see a member of staff and be given instructions as to their visit, including:
● Wearing a face covering;
● Signing in using the NHS Test and Trace system (only for those who are purchasing tickets directly from The Stained Glass Museum. If you have purchased a joint ticket with Ely Cathedral you will have already provided your details);
● Following a one-way system through the shop and gallery (a designated route);
● Social distancing guidelines, keeping 1m+ apart;
● Using ‘wait’ or ‘stop’ signs in busy areas;
● Assembly areas for queuing and circulation;
We have also:
● Removed some interactives and handling items from the gallery temporarily;
● Reduced seating and robust cleaning regime;
We are encouraging visitors to use:
● Card rather than cash transactions in the shop;
● Hand sanitiser on their way in and out of the museum.
Is it safe to visit?
We have acquired the ‘We’re Good to Go’ Industry Standard mark which means that we have followed government and industry COVID-19 guidelines, have undertaken a rigorous Risk Assessment and have procedures in place to maintain cleanliness and aid social distancing.
In addition, we are taking the following preventative measures for everyone:
● Increasing the frequency of hand sanitising (and handwashing where available) and surface cleaning throughout the museum;
● Following social distancing guidelines set out by the government, i.e. 1m +, with signage and floor markings in the public areas of the museum;
● Where social distancing guidelines cannot be followed, e.g. group tours or school visits, we have suspended these areas of activities;
● Signage stating that those suffering from symptoms of COVID-19 or advised to self-isolate should not enter the museum (this applies to both workforce and public);
● Restricting visitor numbers and regulating pedestrian traffic on the stairway and entrance to the museum through radio-controlled traffic flow / traffic light system to maintain one-way system;
● Introducing a one-way system throughout the museum (where possible), and placing ● Ensuring visitors wear face coverings in the museum shop, and strongly encouraging them to wear them throughout their visit to the museum.
Do you comply with the Good to Go charter?
Yes we do! We are pleased to have acquired the ‘We’re Good to Go’ Industry Standard mark, which means that we have followed government and industry COVID-19 guidelines, have undertaken a rigorous Risk Assessment and have procedures in place to maintain cleanliness and aid social distancing.
What happens if I, or someone I'm about to visit with, shows symptoms of Covid-19?
Visitors should not visit the museum if they have the following symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19):
● a new continuous cough
● a high temperature
● a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia)
Signs to this effect will be placed throughout the building.
Is there somewhere to leave my bags?
Large bags are not allowed into the museum gallery.
Are dogs allowed into the museum?
Yes! Well behaved dogs are welcome to visit the museum, if they are on a lead and with their responsible owners.
Are audio guides or guided tours available?
Although we have removed our audio guides, you can go on an audio tour by scanning QR codes on labels using your mobile phone. Unfortunately we are not running any guided tours at the moment.
Is your museum suitable for children and families?
Although we have temporarily removed the interactive light box and toys from the gallery, our younger visitors can pick up a trail or activity sheet from the museum gallery.
Can groups visit?
In order to comply with the government guidance on social distancing, all organised group bookings are suspended.
Are you running glass workshops?
At the moment we plan to begin our specialist glass Workshops for adults, with additional precautions and social distancing measures in place from September 2020. Please check our What's On page for more up-to-date information.
The museum is currently closed.
