EVENING
Brief description: A framed cartoon for panel by Ervin Bossanyi called Evening. It shows two figures and a basket with a chicken in it. In the background is a dark blue sky, the moon and stars.
This preparatory design, known as a 'cartoon' is a 1:1 scale drawing for a panel on the theme of 'Evening'. It depicts a woman and girl wearing head-scarves kneeling over a basket containing several hens. The cartoon is for a stained glass window for the Friedrich-Ebert-Schule in Utersen, Germany. Two completed stained glass panels of these subjects on the theme of 'Morning' and 'Evening', perhaps sample panels for the commission, are now in the museum's collection. When the Nazis rose to power in Germany, Bossanyi emigrated to England taking these designs and panels with him as an example of his work. Bossanyi is perhaps best known for his work in stained glass, with windows in Canterbury and Washington Cathedrals, the New West End Synagogue and the Tate Gallery in London. He was also a versatile designer who worked in many media - sculpture, metalwork, ceramics - as well as being a prolific painter.
