MUSICIAN ANGEL
Brief description: Stained glass cinquefoil of a minstrel angel playing an aulos. Designed by Edward Burne-Jones and made by Morris and Co
Stained glass cinquefoil of a minstrel or musician angel playing an aulos (an ancient Greek musical instrument). The angel is nimbed and has wings. The angel is wearing green robes with a burgundy coloured cloak. The grisaille has decorative interlace pattern with a vine scroll background and vine motif side borders. This delicately painted angel is playing an ancient Greek musical instrument called an aulos. You can tell from the position of the hands, one of which is placed higher and the other lower, that each pipe is producing a different note. The simultaneous sound from each pipe can either produce a harmony, or one pipe can play the melody while the other plays an accompanying 'drone' (like a bagpipe).
