THE TEMPTATION OF ST ANTHONY
Brief description: Stained glass panel depicting the torment of St Anthony surrounded by nightmarish females and hellish visions. Designed and made by Patrick Reyntiens in 1985.
St Anthony led a strict ascetic life as a hermit. He was greatly tormented by hallucinations, in the form of demons and erotic visions, which he resisted with prayer. This panel was made by Patrick Reyntiens (1925-2021) in 1980. Reyntiens has employed a variety of techniques including acid etching and plating, in which two or more pieces of glass are sandwiched together to create a dramatic effect. Well-known as the interpreter of the stained-glass designs of John Piper (1903-1992), Reyntiens was one of Britain's most talented 20th century stained-glass artists, with windows in Southwell Cathedral, Ampleforth Abbey and Washington, DC.
