KNEELING ANGEL & THE GOOD SAMARITAN.

Brief description: Two lancets which form the scene of the parable of The Good Samaritan designed by Harrington Mann and made by J and W Guthrie, 1893. Two lancets show a kneeling angel and the other the parable of the Good Samaritan.

Harrington Mann began his career as a painter and became a member of 'The Glasgow Boys' group in the 1880s. He was noted for his landscape and figure paintings. Some of his outstanding stained glass possessed Art Nouveau elegance and a sensitive approach to colour. He began designing for the Guthries , later Guthrie and Wells, in the 1890s. Harrington Mann ended his career in London as a successful painter of fashionable, if unexceptional, society portraits. After its conversion into a concert hall, a number of windows from Trinity Church, Claremont Street, Glasgow, were given to the Museum by the Scottish National Orchestra. Sadly, a number of others were destroyed when the building was sandblasted. This window is a dramatic and original evocation of a well-known story. The powerful and realistic features of the two figures hints at Harrington Mann's later career as a painter of portraits.
