Location
The Stained Glass Museum, South Transept Triforium, Ely Cathedral, CB7 4DL

Directions
The Stained Glass Museum is located in Ely Cathedral. It is accessed by a stone spiral staircase (40 stairs). As the Museum won’t be open when you arrive, please wait at the entrance door where someone will come and greet you and let you in. If this is your first visit to the Museum, our entrance is found through the main (west) door of the Cathedral and then turn right past the font.

About the Workshop

The workshop will have a maximum of six students, allowing for ample individual as well as group tuition.

In the morning you will learn the techniques of painting on glass using traditional paint and a variety of brushes. These techniques include tracing and matting, learning to control the paint to produce a confident trace-line and using different brushes to make a smooth and even matt. You will also work with a variety of brushes, sticks, quills, sponges, feathers etc to create different decorative effects in both wet and dry matts and to learn the techniques of shading. The glass will be fired at the end of the morning session.

Lunch: There will be an hour’s break for lunch while the glass has its first firing. Lunch is not included, but there are many nearby cafes and sandwich shops or you can bring a packed lunch.

During the afternoon participants apply more layers of paint to develop the image and in using silver-stain, a material that imparts a yellow colour to the glass when fired. There will be a second firing and students will take home a finished piece.

What to bring: The Cathedral can be cold so please wear warm clothing, and you may like to wear old clothing or an overall. It would be useful if you could let us know if you have had any previous experience. Please feel free to bring your own designs. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Health & Safety: Please note that the pigment used in the glass painting workshop does contain lead, and this workshop is therefore not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Meet the Tutor

Derek Hunt, Workshop Tutor

Derek Hunt is a renowned British glass artist who designs glass artworks for public spaces, including libraries, schools, hospitals, theatres, and churches. He works with sculptural objects which can be hung on wires or fixed to walls, and also makes traditional stained glass.

Every project is unique, with a focus on collaboration and community engagement being at the heart of many commissions. Derek contributes articles on contemporary stained glass to a variety of publications and lectures on architectural glass.

Derek has also featured on television programmes such as The Prince's Master Crafters: The Next Generation, Digging Up Britain's Past, and Make It At Market.

Refunds & Cancellations
For cancellations made more than 28 days in advance we offer a full refund or one free date change.

For cancellations made between 14 and 28 days in advance we will offer a 50% refund or allow one free date change.

For cancellations made less than 14 days in advance we are unable to offer a refund or date change on workshop places, although you are welcome to transfer the booking to someone else.

If a date change has already been requested we cannot offer a refund on a subsequent cancellation.

We are unable to refund workshops paid for using workshops vouchers.

Please bear in mind that the Stained Glass Museum is a registered charity (No.1169842) and in order to operate successfully it’s important that we adhere to this policy.

Cancellation of courses by the Museum
Under rare or exceptional circumstances the Museum may have to cancel workshops. If a cancellation is necessary, we will do our utmost to contact you by phone or email as soon as possible before the workshop is held. You will be offered either a full refund or the option to transfer their booking to an alternative date/workshop. Please note The Stained Glass Museum is not liable for any costs associated with travel or accommodation. Please bear this in mind when booking travel or accommodation in advance.
