The Lighthouse is located on Lynn Road and is a couple of minutes’ walk from Ely Cathedral. The workshops do occasionally overrun, so if you are arriving by train, we advise you allow an extra 30-40 minutes when booking your return trip.

About Copper Foiling Workshops

The copper foiling technique, developed in the Tiffany Studios in the 1890s is ideal for decorative panels, sun catchers and mirror work as well as lampshades and other 3D work. Copper tape and solder are used to create a seam joining the pieces of glass.

This practical and informative workshop is a perfect introduction to stained glass work for beginners or those wishing to refresh their knowledge. You will learn the traditional skills of glass cutting and shaping to a pattern, copper foiling and soldering in a relaxed environment with plenty of individual attention. You will be shown how to make and fix appropriate wire hooks and finally the best method for cleaning your piece ready for display.

At the end of the day you will have a unique piece to take home with you, as well as an understanding of the techniques and tools involved if you decide to move on to projects of your own.

The workshop will have a maximum of eight students, allowing for ample individual as well as group tuition from both our tutors.

Lunch: There may be up to an hour’s break for lunch. Lunch is not provided, but there are many nearby cafes and sandwich shops or you can bring a packed lunch.

What to bring: You may like to wear old clothes or overalls.

Physical Ability: Please note this workshop requires participants to stand and work at a workbench so a reasonable level of fitness and physical ability is required.

Health & Safety: Please note that, because of the lead content in the solder, this workshop is not suitable if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

Meet the Tutors

Claire Hart, Workshop Tutor

Claire Hart studied Ceramics and Glass at Middlesex Poly in the mid 1980s completing her sandwich year at Goddard and Gibbs in London. She then moved into studio space at the Southbank Crafts Centre in London and exhibited her mixed media ceramic and leaded glass pieces at various galleries in the UK. After an IRA bomb removed the front window of her craft centre Claire moved north to establish a Stained Glass Studio in North London doing mainly residential commissions and restorations.

Now living in South Lincolnshire, Claire has a small studio where she carries out commissions and restorations and teaches a variety of glass and ceramic classes in Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire area.

Tracy Chamberlain, Workshop Tutor

From a young age Tracy had a natural inclination towards art. Growing up in a family that encouraged creativity, she explored various art forms all through her childhood into adult life, from drawing and painting to textiles, etching and ceramics. A chance encounter with Claire Hart from Glazed Expressions five years ago meant that glass became a further medium to discover and how its properties of colour, transparency, light, fragility and strength offer many opportunities for artistic expression.

Tracy is enthralled by the beauty of the natural world and likes the challenge of using glass to represent it; the juxtaposition of creating something as delicate as a butterfly from a medium that is hard and can shatter is fascinating to her.

Refunds & Cancellations

For cancellations made more than 28 days in advance we offer a full refund or one free date change.

For cancellations made between 14 and 28 days in advance we will offer a 50% refund or allow one free date change.

For cancellations made less than 14 days in advance we are unable to offer a refund or date change on workshop places, although you are welcome to transfer the booking to someone else.

If a date change has already been requested we cannot offer a refund on a subsequent cancellation.

We are unable to refund workshops paid for using workshops vouchers.

Please bear in mind that the Stained Glass Museum is a registered charity (No.1169842) and in order to operate successfully it’s important that we adhere to this policy.


Cancellation of courses by the Museum
Under rare or exceptional circumstances the Museum may have to cancel workshops. If a cancellation is necessary, we will do our utmost to contact you by phone or email as soon as possible before the workshop is held. You will be offered either a full refund or the option to transfer their booking to an alternative date/workshop. Please note The Stained Glass Museum is not liable for any costs associated with travel or accommodation. Please bear this in mind when booking travel or accommodation in advance.
