DESCENT OF HOLY SPIRIT
Brief description: Stained glass panels forming a tracery light of a dove by Christopher Whall
This dove, descending from the heavens, is part of the tracery of a large seven-light east window depicting Christ Enthroned with Angels and Saints. It was made by leading Arts and Crafts artist Christopher Whall (1849-1924) in 1906 for St. Mark’s Church, Claughton, Birkenhead, Cheshire. St Mark's Church, connected to the local St. John the Evangelist Church in Birkenhead was built in 1891, and became a separate parish in 1922. By 1991 it had closed, and the valued “Father Willis” organ transported to a new home in Leiden Cathedral in the Netherlands. The superb east window, formed of seven-lights and more than 50 individual panels, was also saved from demolition in its entirety (apart from one missing panel from the bottom row), and put in storage before being transported to its current home, the Stained Glass Repository; a charitable trust that seeks to rescue good quality glass, and find an alternative home for it.
