ANGEL MUSICIAN
Brief description: Two-panel light of Angel Musicians designed by Edward Burne-Jones and made by Morris and Comapny 1910=1912. Italianate style. Angel with zither, scroll around neck, cream robes, red wings, grass at base
Lancet window showing a standing angel facing 3/4 right, head in profile with bare feet. In left hand, holding a palm. In right hand holding a zither. The angel is dressed in white robes and a damasked cloak, with bright red wings and has a scroll around the neck. The angel is shown against a blue curatin background with green foliage at the top and grass at the base. This Angel Musicians has been designed in the Italianate style favoured by Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) work the 1870s. The designs were first used for a window in Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, in 1875, although this window was made much later. During the 1880s Burne-JonesÂ’ style underwent a significant change. Later windows, such as those in Birmingham Cathedral, show the profound impact of Byzantine mosaics, both in the hieratic, elongated figure drawing and in the technique that uses small pieces of glass and dense, assertive leading.
