Brief description: Colour photograph of a single panel on a workbench of buildings, originally from Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. Restored at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
Like most glass firms of the 20th century, Goddard and Gibbs also performed restoration work. This image is of a small section of the much larger window from Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, painted by Abraham van Linge in 1631. The window depicts the Old Testament prophet Jonah surveying the city of Ninevah after his encounter with the whale. This panel depicts some of the buildings of Ninevah. Van Linge (1625-1641) produced various beautifully painted windows for Oxford University. Written on reverse 'Please return to Mr S Radcliffe'. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
