Brief description: Colour photograph of a single panel on a workbench depicting John Bunyan. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
Here, this panel is yet to be leaded together. It depicts John Bunyan, the author of the famous Christian allegory 'The Pilgrim's Progress' (1678). Bunyan (1628-1688) sits at a desk, quill poised over an empty sheet of paper. A candle, another quill, and an empty ink-pot are on the desk. The window behind him shows a view of a rural town and The Celestial City, the fictional destination of the pilgrim in The Pilgrim's Progress. The light of the city, which represents Heaven, shines on Bunyan as he starts to right. The window was commissioned for the three hundredth anniversary of the publication of The Pilgrim's Progress. Written on reverse 'Please return to Mr S Radcliffe'. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
