Brief description: Colour photograph of a single panel depicting Our Lady of Czestochowa with lead removed on the workbench. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
This panel was either in the process of being leaded for the first time, or re-leaded for restoration. It depicts the Virgin Mary in a blue robe patterned with gold fleur-de-lis and a golden halo. There are two prominent scratches on her cheek. The infant Christ its on her lap, dressed in a red robe, and raising his hand in a gesture of peace. The window is based on an original bejewelled wooden icon, dating from the 1300s. The legend goes that the icon was stolen during a Hussite raid on the monastery in 1430, but when the Hussites tried to leave with the painting on a cart, the horse refused to move. Angered, a soldier slashed at the icon twice, scratching Mary's cheek, and was then struck dead. All attempts to repair the scars have allegedly failed. Written on reverse 'Please return to Mr S Radcliffe'. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
