Brief description: Design for a stained glass window made up of one light depicting Saint Peter. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
St. Peter is one of the most prominent of Jesus' twelve apostles. He wears a blue tunic with a green cloak, and holds a book and a set of keys. Behind him, a ship comes into shore. Both the ship and the keys refer to Peter's meeting with Jesus after his resurrection (John 21). A disguised Jesus helps Peter and the other disciples bring in an astonishing catch of fish, a metaphor for their status as 'fishers of men', i.e. evangelists for the church. After revealing himself, Jesus charges Peter with looking after his church, hence his depiction with the keys of heaven. This design also leaves space for an inscription and coat of arms. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
