Brief description: Black and white photograph of a single light window with central lozenge depicting the crucifixion. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
This window promotes the return of England to Catholicism. In a central lozenge, Christ is crucified. He is naked, aside from a loincloth and his crown of thorns. Blood issues from the nails in his hands and feet, and an angel collects some of it in a cup. Above his head, 'INRI' is inscribed on a piece of paper. This stands for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum (Jesus Christ, King of the Jews), and was the charge Jesus was executed under. The Virgin Mary watches solemnly. Around the lozenge, an inscription reads 'O Mary, Mother of God, bring England and Wales back to the faith of our fathers'. Four of said fathers are depicted in each corner around the lozenge. From left to right, they are St. Peter, one of the twelve apostles and the first Pope; St. Gregory, an early Pope noted for his religious reforms; St. Augustine, a hugely influential early Christian writer; and St. David, patron saint of Wales. The rest of the window is composed of plain rectangular quarries. Commissioned by Campbell Smith. Goddard and Gibbs job number 21/47678/a, LON 6237. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
