Scouting, set up in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell, is a youth movement which focuses on fostering practical skills and a love of the outdoors in children. The movement has long been associated with Christianity, with the original promise swearing duty to God. Here, Jesus Christ, dressed in a white robe, cloak, and sandals, spreads his arms in a gesture of peace. He is distinguished by his cruciform halo. A Cub Scout kneels before him. On the right hand side, a Brownie and a Scoutmaster stand, whilst a Boy Scout kneels. A banner with inscription stretches over the two lights reading 'WE ACKNOWLEDGE THEE TO BE THE LORD'. At the bottom is a memorial inscription commemorating Ethel Kittridge, a Scout leader, with the fleur-de-lis of the Scouts and trefoil of the Guides on either side. Goddard and Gibbs 21/48076/b, 6026. On reverse 'Please return to Mr Simon Ratcliffe, England'. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
