Brief description: Black and white photograph of a 3 light window depicting martyrs. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
This window depicts six Catholic martyrs, all executed following the English Reformation, where the Church of England became the only acceptable Christian denomination in England. On the left, John Bodey and St. Swithun Wells stand together, Bodey reading the Bible over Wells' shoulder. John Bodey (1549-1583) was sacked from his fellowship at New College, Oxford, for his beliefs, and later hung, drawn and quartered for treason. St. Swithun Wells (1536-1591) was a tutor and schoolmaster, whose house in Gray's Inn Lane was frequently used to shelter Catholics. He was hanged outside it after his household was caught holding Mass. In the centre, Lady Margaret Pole and St. Anne Line stand together. Margaret Pole (1473-1541), a high-ranking noblewoman, was a staunch opposer of Henry VIII's religious reforms before being executed for treason. St. Anne Line (1563-1601) was hanged for sheltering Catholic priests in her house. On the right, Nicholas Tichborne consults the Bible, whilst his brother Thomas prays the rosary. Nicholas (d. 1601) was executed for his Catholicism and for his 1598 freeing of Thomas from prison; Thomas (1567-1602) was betrayed, re-arrested, and executed just four years later.
