Brief description: Black and white photograph of a roundel window depicting Samuel, David, Joseph and Issac. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
This roundel window, split into four quarters, shows four significant figures from the Old Testament as young men. At the top left, the boy Samuel kneels in prayer, wearing his nightshirt, as he hears the Lord's voice calling to him. He would later become a significant prophet and leader. At the top right, the future King David kneels and looks up to heaven as he plays his harp. At the bottom left, the boy Isaac kneels, bound and stripped, about to be sacrificed by his father Abraham to prove his faith to the Lord. At the bottom right, the young Joseph, dressed in his famous coloured coat, holds a wheat sheaf. Joseph's prophetic dream about his being the tallest sheaf predicted his later status as advisor to the Pharoah. Behind each figure is a symbol representing them: Samuel has a menorah, before which he was sleeping; David a spear, referring to his warlike nature; Isaac has the ram which replaced him as Abraham's sacrifice; and Joseph has the moon and stars, another prophetic dream of his. All are surrounded by a floral border. On reverse is the photo number 10788. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
