Brief description: Black and white photograph of a 2 light window depicting Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
St. Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231) is noted for her charity and support of religious works in Thuringia, ruled by her husband Louis IV. One narrative holds that she met her husband as she went out to feed the poor. He asked her what was under her cloak, and when she opened it, Louis saw a vision of white and red roses, indicating God's protection. Here, St. Elizabeth, wearing her crown, stands in front of a group of children. Roses spring out of her basket, and flowers grow out of the ground around her. The three children smile up at her. A castle looms in the background. At the bottom of the window is a memorial inscription. Goddard and Gibbs job number 21/81213, FAN 73/3186. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
