Brief description: Black and white photograph of a single light window depicting St George on a sailing ship. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
This design, delightfully medieval in scale, shows an English soldier, perhaps St. George himself, in full plate armour, with a St. George Cross over his breastplate. He holds a ginormous sword and stands proudly on a sailing ship, which flies a British pennant from the mast. A tower at the back flies a massive royal standard. The window matches the original design in most respects, except the pennant has changed to one resembling the Royal Navy Church pennant, which lets other ships know a religious service is currently taking place, a neat detail for a stained glass window in a church. Commissioned by Royal Standard Beaconsfield. Goddard and Gibbs job number 21/ 82354/B, FAN 4688. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
