Brief description: Black and white photograph of a single light window depicting the Royal Standard, a ship, and a swan. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
This window is dedicated to the de Bohun family, a significant group of English nobles during the Anglo-Saxon period and early Middle Ages. From top to bottom, their emblems are the Royal Standard (the flag of the English monarch), a ship flying the combined Royal arms of England and France as a sail, and a swan in chains, the heraldic badge of the de Bohun family, later used by noble families related by marriage, after the male line went extinct in 1373. Significant members of the de Bohun family include Humphrey de Bohun (1270-1298), who was one of the knights instrumental in forcing Edward I to confirm the Magna Carta; William de Bohun (1312-1360), a commander during the Hundred Years' War who led the English to victory at the Battle of Morlaix (1342); and Mary de Bohun (1369-1394), first wife of King Henry IV and mother of King Henry V. It is thanks to Mary de Bohun that the family is associated with the Royal Standard. Commissioned by Royal Standard PH. Goddard and Gibbs job number 21/82354/C, FAN 4769. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
