Brief description: Black and white photograph of a 4 light window depicting St. Francis of Assisi. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
Here, St. Francis and another monk are depicted in a central roundel spreading across all four lights, against a background of plain diamond-shaped quarries. St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) is an extremely popular saint noted for his humility and for founding the Franciscan order of monks. St. Francis is the patron saint of animals, and many legends surround his love of and skill with them. Here, St. Francis is shown preaching to a spellbound crowd of woodland animals, including an owl and a deer. Another monk sits and watches, hand raised in a gesture of shock. In the background is a rural landscape, complete with distant city. Below the roundel, three dogs and a cat are depicted, connected by twining foliage. At the bottom of the window is a memorial inscription to the Countess Poulett. Commissioned by Earl Poulett. Goddard and Gibbs job number 21/71792, LON 1898. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
