Brief description: Black and white photograph of a 3 light window depicting Joan of Arc, Virgin and Child, and King Charles I. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
This window pairs the Virgin Mary with two unusual figures. On the left is St. Joan of Arc (1412-1431), one of the patron saints of France. Joan, claiming to be guided by religious visions, supported the French army in numerous victories during the Hundred Years War, before being executed for heresy by the English. Here, she is dressed in full plate armour, with a sword at her hip, and carries an embroidered pennant. Orléans, where she helped break an English siege, is depicted behind her. On the right, King Charles I (1600-1649) descends a set of steps. Charles I was executed on a charge of tyranny after losing the English Civil War. He is dressed in the outfit he wears in the painting The Execution of Charles I, now in the National Galleries of Scotland. He carries a bundle in his hand, perhaps a purse to pay the executioner. In the centre, the Virgin Mary, crowned and dressed in ermine-trimmed robes, holds aloft the infant Christ. He is dressed in a white robe and spreads his hands in a gesture reminiscent of his pose on the cross. Commissioned by Rev Lingwood. Goddard and Gibbs job number 21/76966/A, LON 3055. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
