Brief description: Black and white photograph of a 3 light window depicting Christ with Mary and Martha. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
This window depicts an incident from Luke 10:38-42. Jesus is staying at the house of Martha: she is busy with her household chores, whilst her sister Mary sits and listens to Jesus. Martha asks Jesus to have Mary help, but he defends her, saying she has chosen the more worthy task. Here, Jesus sits in the centre, raising his hand to Martha in a gesture of peace. Mary sits at his feet and looks up at him attentively. In the right-hand light, Martha makes an imploring gesture at Mary. She carries a basket of bread on her hip. In the left light, a member of their household staff tends to their grapevines. The presence of grapes and bread is also a reference to the Eucharist, the bread and wine which represent the body and blood of Christ. Commissioned by Rev T Wood. Goddard and Gibbs job number 21/78665/B, LON 3725 B. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
