Brief description: Black and white photograph of a 2 light window depicting Christ and the sacred heart. Saul is depicted in the right hand light. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
A photograph showing the entirety of this window is also in the museum's collection (ELYGM:2025.4.26). On the left, Jesus stands in a central vesica (pointed oval). He holds a flame between his hands, and light bursts out from him. Above, a dove representing the Holy Spirit flies. Christ is dressed in embroidered robes and stands on a globe. Below is a depiction of the Nativity, with St. Joseph spreading a blanket over his wife the Virgin Mary, who cradles the infant Christ in her arms. On the right are two scenes set against a background of plain glass, with the leading creating patterns. At the top, Saul falls off his horse in shock, blinded by a bright light. Christ, raising his hand in a gesture of peace, sits in the centre of the light. At the bottom, a ship flounders in stormy seas. St. Paul saved hundreds of lives in a shipwreck after his arrest. Just as the light depicting Christ presents him at the start and end of his life, the light depicting St. Paul shows him towards the start and end of his spiritual journey. Commissioned by Rev Miss Davies, in honour of Elizabeth Wilhelmina Jones, a headmistress. Goddard and Gibbs job number 21/76833/B, 3189. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
