Brief description: Design for a stained glass window made up of one light depicting Christ carrying the cross with Mary and a soldier. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
Christ meeting his mother is one of the traditional scenes in 'The Stations of the Cross', a series of fourteen scenes depicting the day of Christ's crucifixion in Christian art. Here Christ, dressed in an appropriately sacrificial deep red, pauses and looks back at his mother as he ascends a hill. His crown of thorns drips blood onto his face, and he carries a rather ephemeral cross, the light of his cruciform halo shining through it. The Virgin Mary, dressed in blue and purple with a white headdress, reaches out to him and lifts her gaze to heaven imploringly. The soldier leading Jesus, dressed in typical Roman armour of skirt-like pteruges and a leather breastplate with x-shaped straps, looks back in annoyance. He holds a spear and tugs on a rope tied around Jesus' waist. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
