Brief description: Black and white photograph of a two light window depicting St Chad and St Leonard. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
This window depicts two saints from the Anglo-Saxon period. On the left, St. Chad (d. 672) was a prominent monk and bishop noted for his humility and for spreading Christianity to the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia. Here, he is dressed in his bishops' vestments, holds a mitre (a curved bishop's staff), and raises his arms in a gesture of blessing. St. Leonard (d. 559) was a French monk and hermit, famous for his mercy towards prisoners. He became a very popular saint in the later Middle Ages, perhaps for his association with prisoners, labouring women, and cattle diseases, all common problems in that period. Here, he is dressed in patterned robes, and holds a set of open handcuffs. Each saint is above their heraldic arms. A pretty border of acorns and leaves surrounds each light. Commissioned by Rev Toweson. Goddard and Gibbs job number 21/82228, LON 4490 (delayed). Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
