Brief description: Design for a stained glass window made up of one light depicting St Matthew. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
This pretty geometric window depicts St. Matthew, one of the four gospel-writers and one of Jesus' twelve apostles. Matthew is dressed in a blue tunic with a red-lined orange cloak, and a small red hat. He is barefoot, and carries a book. His large halo fills the top of the window, with blue, red, and green shapes and a label bearing his name forming the background. A winged man, Matthew's symbol in the Tetramorph, traditional symbolic representations of the gospel-writers, sits on a cross below. St. Jerome held Matthew was represented by the winged man because his gospel starts with a genealogy. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
