Brief description: Black and white photograph of a single roundel window depicting the Ven. Nicholas Garlick & Ven. Robert Ludlam. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
This window depicts two Catholic martyrs, executed for the crime of being priests under Elizabeth I. On the left, the Venerable Nicholas Garlick (c. 1555-1588) was a schoolteacher and priest who worked for two and a half years to support Catholic worship in Hampshire and Dorset. He holds a book and a quill, and is dressed in elaborately patterned vestments. On the right is the Venerable Robert Ludlam (1551-1588), a fellow priest. He wears the same vestments, holds a quill, and raises one hand in a sign of peace. Ludlam and Garlick were captured at Padley Chapel during an unrelated raid: they were hung, drawn, and quartered on the 23rd July 1588, and by all accounts died bravely. Four roundels are arranged around the edges of the window. Clockwise, they depict a dove, representing the Holy Spirit, a coat of arms, Padley Chapel, and an open book. The rest of the window has a background of diamond-shaped plain quarries and a patterned border. Commissioned by John A Finch (Sheffield). Goddard and Gibbs job number 21/76784, FAN 3345. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
