Brief description: Black and white photograph of a 3 light window depicting the baptism of Christ. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
This striking geometric window offers a minimalist take on Christ's baptism. On the left, Christ, bare-chested and wrapped in a loose cloak, stands ankle-deep in the River Jordan. A dove, representing the Holy Spirit, rests above his head. On the right, St. John the Baptist, in a camel-hair tunic and cloak, stands on land. He holds a cross-topped staff and a scallop shell. Scallop shells are traditionally associated with Christian baptism, and are often used to pour the water, as shown here. The background is formed of long, pointed panels of clear glass. Window commissioned by Rev Harris. On reverse 2.58 x 17 14"" £108 D/D Goddard and Gibbs job number 21/74606/A, LON 3088. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
