Brief description: Black and white photograph of a window depicting Christ carrying the cross, Mary and a solider. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
The painted design for this window is also in the museum's collection (ELYGM:2025.4.7). Christ meeting his mother is one of the traditional scenes in 'The Stations of the Cross', a series of fourteen scenes depicting the day of Christ's crucifixion in Christian art. Here, Christ pauses and looks back at his mother as he ascends a hill. His crown of thorns drips blood onto his face, and he carries a rather ephemeral cross, the light of his cruciform halo shining through it. The Virgin Mary reaches out him and lifts her gaze to heaven. The soldier leading Jesus, dressed in typical Roman armour of skirt-like pteruges and a leather breastplate with x-shaped straps, looks back in annoyance. He holds a spear and tugs on a rope tied around Jesus' waist. This window was designed by A E Buss for St Dominic's Church, Homerton. Goddard and Gibbs job number 1245/A. 21/66409/A. Arthur Edward Buss (1905-1999) joined Goddard & Gibbs in 1946.
