This design, spread across two lights, shows the Annunciation surrounded by a wreath. On the left, the Archangel Gabriel kneels, holding a sprig of lilies in his hand. Lilies are associated with the Virgin Mary because they represent purity: they also appear around the wreath. St. Gabriel wears a golden and white robe with red and blue wings. On the right, the statuesque Virgin Mary, dressed in a purple dress and blue cloak with long, curling blonde hair, stands at a lectern, where she has been reading the Bible. Her hand is raised in a gesture of shock. A quote from the Magnificat, a canticle developed from Gabriel's words to Mary, weaves around the top of the wreath. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
