Brief description: Mounted black and white photograph of a 2 light window depicting the evacuation of Dunkirk. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
This memorial window commemorates the service of women, soldiers, and priests during the Second World War. Scenes in bud shapes are set against a background of plain quarries. At the top, a priest gives communion to soldiers outside, and a nurse helps a wounded man off a train. In the centre, in a continuous scene split across the two lights, the small boats arrive at Dunkirk to rescue British soldiers. In 1940, Allied troops attempting to prevent the invasion of France were pinned by the German army at the coast of Dunkirk. They were evacuated by a gigantic fleet of small boats, many owned and operated by British civilians. A wide view of the beach at Dunkirk appears below in a rectangular panel across the two lights. In the corners, women holding blankets and food, and sailors with a rope, staff, and lantern, stand proudly. Design for the Victory Chapel of St George's Church Ramsgate. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
