Brief description: Mounted photograph of a 4 light, 17 tracery light window depicting Christ, Mary, St. John the Baptist, and the seven Catholic sacraments. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
This window is based around the seven Catholic sacraments. Each sacrament is appears in a circular frame against a background of plain quarries. Baptism, as the most important sacrament, receives the central and largest circle. Then, anti-clockwise, we have Confirmation, Unction (the giving of last rites to the dying), Penance (confession), Eucharist, Marriage, and Ordination (when somebody becomes a priest). The tracery lights depict three biblical figures. On the left is the Virgin Mary, kneeling in prayer. On the right is St. John the Baptist, in his traditional hair shirt and a cloak. At the top, Christ sits enthroned in majesty, one hand raised in a gesture of blessing, the other holding an open book. Goddard and Gibbs job number 2143W. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
