Brief description: Mounted black and white photograph of a three light stained glass window depicting Christ and scenes from the New Testament. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
This three light window meditates on the works of Christ, with framed scenes set against backgrounds of plain rectangular quarries. On the left, Andrew introduces Christ to his brother Simon Peter in front of their fishing boat. Below, a small boy, lead by a disciple, presents Jesus with the bread and fish he will use to feed the five thousand. In the centre, Christ is depicted as the light of the world. Light surrounds him, and blazes out in the shape of the cross. Christ stands on a globe, and above him the Holy Spirit flies in the shape of a dove. Below, St. Joseph spreads a blanket over the sleeping Mary and infant Christ in the stable, as an ox and sheep look on. On the right, Saul falls off his horse in shock as an angel appears to him. This scene of recruitment mirrors the one on the opposite light. Below, a ship flounders in stormy seas. St. Paul saves the lives of men during a shipwreck in Acts 27:27-43. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
