Brief description: Design for a stained glass window made up of one light depicting Saint Mark. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
This pretty geometric window depicts St. Mark, one of the four gospel-writers and perhaps a disciple of St. Paul. St. Mark wears a dark blue robe with red trim and a blue toga. He holds a bible. His large halo forms the top of the window, whilst the background is composed of deep red and purple glass and a label bearing his name. At the bottom, a winged lion, Mark's symbol in the Tetramorph, traditional symbolic representations of the four gospel-writers, sits on a cross. St. Jerome held St. Mark was represented by the lion because his gospel starts with a prophecy in the desert. Panel designed for an unknown place '??ivine' in Durban, South Africa. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
