Brief description: Design for a stained glass window made up of three lights and six tracery lights depicting 'Mr Valiant'. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
Proposed design for the west window of the south aisle at St Matthew's Church, Walsall. Left and right lights contain a crest. The central light shows a figure dressed as a soldier, with a padded jerkin under a breastplate, and carrying a sword. He is labelled as 'Mr. Valiant', perhaps Mr. Valiant-for-Truth, a character from John Bunyan's allegorical Christian work The Pilgrim's Progress (1678). Mr. Valiant-for-Truth is a pilgrim encountered on the protagonist's journey, exhausted after defeating the three robbers Faint-Heart, Mistrust, and Guilt. Here, Mr. Valiant stands on a plinth with an open book. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
