Brief description: Design for a stained glass window made up of one light depicting the nativity. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
This beautiful, geometric design depicts the Nativity. The tiny infant Christ lies in a manger, body twisted towards with mother. His outstretched arms and crossed feet are reminiscent of his posture on the cross. The Virgin Mary, dressed in purple, with a blue cloak and white headdress, kneels before him in wonder. Joseph, dressed in white with a green cloak and white headdress, holds a lamp over Christ and carries a staff. Two donkeys look on. The star of Bethlehem shines at the top, against a background of blue, yellow and white pointed glass pieces. Smaller stars form the window's border. Goddard & Gibbs, founded from a merger of Walter Gibbs & Sons and Goddard's Glass Works in 1938, were prominent makers of stained glass for the international market and also conserved and restored glass.
