Brief description: Preparatory cartoon for a single light window a Risen Christ and a sleeping Roman soldier. Designed at the Goddard and Gibbs Studio, London
A cartoon is a design for a stained glass window which shows where the lead lines will go. This one has been executed in charcoal and white paint. It depicts Christ rising from the tomb. He is naked aside from his burial shroud, and raises one hand in a gesture of blessing. In the other he carries a pennant, a symbol of his victory over death. He is nimbed with a cruciform halo, and light blazes around him as he steps out of the tomb. A Roman soldier, in typical armour of a muscle cuirass, skirt-like pteruges, and sandals, sleeps beside the tomb, cuddling his spear and helmet. He was supposed to be on guard, in case Jesus' disciples attempted to steal his body.
