Brief description: Preparatory sketch prepared by Simon Ratcliffe, glass painter and restorer at the Goddard and Gibbs studio, London
This piece of paper bears three pencil studies. In the centre is a study of an older woman sitting, her chin on her hand and her other arm folded across her lap. She looks to her left, and wears a knee-length dress with a square neckline. Her feet and hair are only lightly sketched in. On the right is the head and shoulders of a person wearing a hat shaped like a flat-topped cone, their head slightly turned towards the viewer. On the left is a brief pencil study of the torso and legs of a naked man, standing contrapposto (with his weight on one leg), and therefore probably copied from a statue. Simon Ratcliffe (1941-2024) was a glass painter and conservator. He worked as Chief Painter for Goddard & Gibbs for much of his career.
