Proposed design for St Michael's Church, Sutton Bonnington, a variant of ELYGM:2025.4.11. St. Hubert (c. 656-727), was a Frankish noble and great hunting enthusiast. Upon the death of his wife, he forwent going to church in favour of hunting. On Good Friday, he saw a vision of the crucified Christ between the antlers of a stag, and immediately gave up his birthright and became a priest. St. Hubert is therefore the patron saint of hunting, and his relics were believed to cure rabies. Here, St. Hubert's conversion is depicted across a two light window. On the left, St. Hubert, dressed in a red tunic stands spellbound. His hunting dog looks at a fox darting past. On the right, a large stag stands with the image of the crucified Christ between its antlers. A rural landscape forms the background of the scene. There is an inscription in the bottom left corner. Arthur Edward Buss (1905-1999), joined Goddard & Gibbs in 1946. Beautiful rural backgrounds are a feature of his work.
