Brief description: File of 22 letters sent or received by Simon Ratcliffe whilst seeking employment in the USA
Simon Ratcliffe (1941-2024) was a glass painter and conservator. He worked as Chief Painter for Goddard & Gibbs for much of his career, where significant commissions included the Queen's diamond jubilee window at Westminster Hall. This file contains a series of correspondence about seeking better-paid employment in America. Companies contacted include Rohlf's, Payne Studios, the Willet Stained Glass Studio, The Stained Glass School, Hogan Stained Glass Studio, and Conrad Schmitt Studio. Ratcliffe appears to have had a lengthy argument with Payne's about their payment rates before rejecting their offer, and to have accepted some work for Rohlf's. Several letters praising work done by Rohlf's are included.
