Brief description: Design for a 3 light stained glass window depicting St John, Jesus and St Francis
Proposed design for the south aisle window, depicting St John in the left light, Christ healing in the centre light and St Francis in the right hand light. Each window is set against a quarry background. St. John is one of the four gospel-writers, and holds a cup with a snake emerging from it and piece of paper. The cup is a reference to a legend in which St. John was offered a cup of poisoned wine. When he blessed it, the poison left in the form of a snake. In the centre, Christ, who is wrapped in a white robe, reaches out to heal a leper, with bandages wrapped around his sores. St. Francis of Assisi (c. 1181-1226) was an Italian monk, founder of the Franciscan Order, and serves as patron saint of animals. The birds and rabbit gathering round him are a reference to his habit in life of preaching to groups of attentive animals. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
